Most frequent travellers (including flight attendants and pilots) are at a high risk of developing a condition known as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).  DVT is a life-threatening condition when blood clots form in the deep veins in your body, usually in the legs.  These blood clots can break loose and travel through the bloodstream and become lodged into the heart and lungs, leading to pulmonary embolism.

Symptoms of DVT may include leg pain or swelling but it can also occur without any symptoms.  It can also be developed with certain medical conditions that affect how blood clots, prolonged bed rest and prolonged sitting.

Frequent flyers (such as flight attendant and pilots) are at a high risk of developing DVT because of  prolonged sitting or standing, particularly during long flights.   When seated for prolonged periods without leg movements,  blood clots are likely to form because the calf muscles are not contracting.  Calf muscle contraction helps circulate  blood in the lower limb.  It most be noted however, that some experts believe the risk of frequent flyers developing DVT is almost negligible.  Nonetheless, it is best to be safe and establish the potential of developing DVT.  That is why it is recommended that frequent flyers wear compression socks.

Why Compression Socks?

Compression socks are specialized hosiery that help improve blood circulation by applying pressure on the legs.  These compression socks apply high pressure starting from the ankle, then gradually decreases as it goes up the legs. This grade pressure from ankle to leg helps maintain the normal blood flow during long flights or prolonged sitting periods.

Compression socks are not just for flight attendants and pilots.   They are also beneficial for workers that spend a lot of time on their feet or sit for prolonged periods.  These include nurses, estheticians, teachers, bank tellers, industrial workers, and the like.  There are many types of compression socks available for both men and women with different compression gradients.  Also available are wide ranges of styles and colours to suit various lifestyles and professional grooming requirements.

To determine if you are at risk of developing DVT, consult with your physician.  Then contact us for a free, no obligation assessment to determine the right compression socks or stockings for your needs.

Until next time, stay healthy and keep moving!
